15 March 2009

Finally making it through the craziness of numerous airports and missing connecting flights, I arrived in Berlin. Hopping on the TXL bus from the airport I was immediately thrown into an overview of the city. After embarrassing myself by attempting to speak German, I found my way to our hostel. The one thing I could go for was a much needed nap, but that was not in the agenda.

We first went to see the Berlin Wall, and had to climb onto a futuristic space trolley, or the German's would call, the M4 streetcar. We zip around the city filled with graffiti on most buildings, while at the same time the streets are extremely clean.

After watching documentaries about the Berlin Wall and then seeing it and touching the wall in person, I realized how different my trip here would have been if in fact the wall was still up. Instead I was able to walk between the outer and inter walls and see where the machine guns and other traps were set.

The only thing to do after visiting such a landmark is to try Berliner Kindl Weisse beer which is a must have for any visitors to Berlin. The string of white lights hung over head as I sat on a yellow bench and enjoyed my raspberry beer and grilled sausage; a fitting way to end my new visit to Berlin.

  1. GET A PICTURE OF THE M4!!! sounds cool! AND STOP TAKING PICTURES OF RANDOM PEOPLE'S KIDS!!! Creepy...oh so very creepy. Although, you did do an amazing job with that photo of them considering you took it from inside your van as you extended candy to them in your other hand while inviting them to hop in so you could take them to see your "REALLY FUN" basement...

  2. I love your descriptions--I cold see the lights and taste the raspberry beer. I saw the kids on the fence and thought "how Jessie of you" so keep capturing the kids (its not creepy like MJ says). I guess no trip would be worth it if you got enough sleep and didn't have flight transfer problems. Keep writing, Jess. Love you, Mom

  5. What has happened since your last blog. Sonic and I are on the edges of our seats awaiting to hear. I has rained here ALL week. Today your dad and I started our walk with the three dogs--all eager and interested--and the rain came POURing down, torrential--I mean raining horses and cows--We got to edge of our property at Dickeys and Sonic said "No More!" He sat down in the road, turned around and wanted to go back. We took two more steps--made him take two--and then looked at each other and said, "Let's go back," Sonic and Aragorn practically dragged us up the drive--well, they wanted to but since we're the alpha dogs, we didn't let them. We were soaked with unmbrellas. Snowball is the only dog that wanted to be blown dry--but I held Sonic til he was dried off. . . and it keeps pouring down. Jen gets in Jax tonight--so far flight not delayed but it's raining all over FL--flood watches up. Stay dry! Love, Mom, dad, and Sonic

  6. Hey Jessie,
First off, happy (belated) birthday! I didn't know about your blog or I would have sent birthday wishes on the appropriate birth day. Second, I LOVE your photos and descriptions. Sausage and raspberry beer ... hmmm, don't know about that. The only thing you're missing here is incessant rain. Oh, and as I predicted, Kris Allen is the new American Idol, so I know that's all the rage over there (well, that and Hasselhoff). Anyhoo ... guten nacht or, since it is 11 p.m. Florida time, perhaps I should say, guten morgen. Joe and Sophie say hi -- auf wiedersehen! Lauri
